CS Murkomen Defends Media Shutdown After Protests Turn Chaotic

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly defended the government’s controversial decision to shut down live broadcasts during the 25th June anniversary protests. Addressing the press, Murkomen pointed fingers at sections of the media, accusing them of fueling unrest.
"The biggest problem with live broadcasting is the idea that media becomes the center of mobilization for some of these protesters. Some media stations were directing the protesters; that is very irresponsible journalism." He said.
The protests, originally planned to mark the anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, spiraled into chaos. At least 15 people died, and more than 400 others, including police officers, were injured. Following the violence, the Communications Authority issued a notice suspending live coverage across multiple stations. The decision sparked widespread criticism from civil rights groups and press unions.
"I would rather appear before a judge in a working country and explain why I made a particular decision than fail to act, and tomorrow there is no country or judge left," he said.
He maintained that national security must take precedence over broadcast freedoms.
