Court Approves Extradition of US Citizen Over Minnesota Fentanyl Death

A Kenyan court has approved the extradition of US citizen Hudeife Muhumed Mire to the United States to face murder and manslaughter charges linked to the 2022 fentanyl overdose death of Samantha Myers in Minnesota. The decision clears the way for Kenyan and US authorities to complete the legal process required to transfer Mire to American jurisdiction.
The ruling was delivered at the Milimani Law Courts, where the court found that the extradition request met the legal threshold under Kenyan law and existing international agreements. Mire had been arrested in Kenya following a request from US authorities who accused him of fleeing the country to evade prosecution.
According to prosecutors in Minnesota, Mire is alleged to have supplied drugs laced with fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, which led to the fatal overdose of Myers in April 2022. He faces charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, offences that carry lengthy prison sentences under US law.
During the extradition proceedings, Mire is reported to have indicated his willingness to return to the United States, a move expected to fast-track the extradition process. The court subsequently ordered that he remain in custody pending completion of logistical and diplomatic arrangements.
Kenyan authorities said the case underscores continued cooperation between Kenya and the United States in fighting transnational crime, particularly drug trafficking. Once extradited, Mire will be arraigned in Minnesota to answer to the charges related to the overdose death.
