Chelsea's pursuit of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has come to an end after negotiations between the two Premier League clubs collapsed, with Sunderland maintaining that the Switzerland international is not for sale.
The Blues had identified the 33-year-old midfielder as an experienced addition to Xabi Alonso's squad, with the Chelsea head coach keen to reunite with a player he managed successfully during their title-winning campaign at Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea opened talks by submitting an initial offer reported to be worth around £8 million. Sunderland rejected the proposal immediately, considering it well below their valuation of one of the club's most influential players.
Club officials remained firm throughout the negotiations, insisting Xhaka would not be allowed to leave regardless of Chelsea's interest, viewing him as a central figure in Sunderland's plans for the upcoming season.
Despite speculation that Chelsea were preparing an improved offer, discussions failed to progress, and the transfer has now collapsed without an agreement being reached between the two clubs.
Xhaka has also reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland, providing a major boost to the club as preparations continue for the new Premier League campaign.
While away on international duty with Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup, Xhaka declined to discuss the transfer speculation publicly, stating that his full focus remained on helping his country in the tournament.
The experienced midfielder said any matters concerning his club future would be handled after the World Cup, leaving negotiations to his representatives while he concentrated on international football.
Chelsea's interest in Xhaka was largely influenced by Alonso, who values the midfielder's leadership, tactical intelligence and experience following their successful spell together in Germany.
The collapse of the deal means Chelsea will now be forced to turn their attention to alternative midfield targets as they continue reshaping the squad during the summer transfer window.
For Sunderland, keeping hold of their captain is regarded as a significant statement of intent, demonstrating the club's determination to retain its key players despite interest from one of the Premier League's biggest clubs.
Xhaka remains under contract at Sunderland and is expected to play a leading role both on and off the pitch as the club prepares for the 2026–27 season.
The failed transfer also highlights Sunderland's resolve in the transfer market, with the club unwilling to part with one of its most experienced players as it looks to build on last season's progress and compete strongly in the campaign ahead.
