Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella has delivered unusually candid criticism of the club’s recent decision-making and internal instability, saying the turbulence has hindered progress both on and off the pitch.

The Spain international reflected on a difficult season for Chelsea, citing heavy defeats and inconsistency across competitions. “We lacked experience… For many players it was the first time playing matches of that level and we paid the price,” he said.

On the club’s broader strategy, Cucurella acknowledged Chelsea’s youth-focused recruitment policy but expressed concern about its impact on competitiveness. “I understand this is part of the club’s policy… But to fight for big trophies you need more,” he said. “Signing young players only might complicate achieving those goals.”

Central to his comments was criticism of the mid-season managerial change. Cucurella said the departure of Enzo Maresca in January had been a major disruption. “The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” he said. “If you asked me, I would not have made that decision… To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”

He minced few words on the resulting instability. “The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell. We had a caretaker first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is,” Cucurella said, highlighting the disruptive effect of interim leadership followed by a new head coach.

Despite his criticisms, Cucurella spoke positively about new manager Liam Rosenior. “Liam is a very good person and has been great at handling the group… He has good football ideas,” he said. “But we do not always have time to train them because we play every three days.”

The defender’s remarks underscored the challenge Rosenior faces in implementing his philosophy mid-season. With a congested fixture schedule, there has been little opportunity for detailed tactical training, according to Cucurella.

Cucurella also revisited the stability Chelsea had under Maresca’s 18-month tenure, noting that players nearly instinctively understood systems and roles late in his reign. “Under Maresca we were more stable… if we changed the system, we knew what we had to do. You need that time,” he said.

His comments went beyond immediate results to broader club leadership and transfer policy. Cucurella expressed concern that focusing heavily on youth without a core of experienced players could slow Chelsea’s challenge for major silverware.

The interview has sparked debate among supporters and media, with some praising his honesty and others questioning the timing of public criticism during an international break. Some voices within the squad have publicly urged patience with Rosenior, highlighting internal divisions over the club’s direction.

Chelsea’s ownership and strategic planning now face intensified scrutiny as fans and pundits react to Cucurella’s remarks. There is growing speculation about the long-term vision at Stamford Bridge and how the balance between youth development and winning now can be achieved.

Marc Cucurella: “The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”

“I understand this is part of the club’s policy & that they want to take this direction, signing young players and looking to the future. But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this (PSG) make you feel discouraged”

“We have a good core of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need MORE. Signing young players only might complicate achieving those goals.”

As Chelsea prepares to resume its domestic campaign, the fallout from these comments will add pressure on the board and coaching staff. With Champions League qualification still in reach but not assured, the club enters a critical phase as it seeks stability and clarity after one of its most contentious interview moments in recent years.
