Multiple verified reports from Kenyan updates confirm that autopsies are underway at the City Mortuary in Nairobi on a group of exhumed bodies from Mwingi, Kitui County, under the supervision of Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor.

The bodies were recovered during a police-led operation after shallow graves were discovered in the Mwingi area, prompting a forensic investigation into possible unlawful burials and cause of death. Authorities transported the remains to Nairobi to allow coordinated postmortem examinations involving government pathologists and homicide detectives.

Preliminary information indicates that seven unidentified bodies were among those exhumed and are currently undergoing detailed forensic analysis. The process includes documentation, fingerprinting where possible, DNA sampling, and toxicology screening aimed at establishing identity and determining whether the deaths were natural, accidental, or criminal in nature.

Investigators have stated that the condition of the remains and time elapsed since burial are expected to complicate identification, increasing reliance on DNA matching and missing persons databases. The National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are coordinating the inquiry alongside the government pathologist’s office.

Officials have also indicated that the findings from the autopsies will guide the next phase of investigations, including potential exhumation of additional graves in the wider Mwingi region if linked burial sites are confirmed.

Human rights and community concerns have emerged locally, with residents seeking clarity on whether the burials were connected to criminal activity, neglect, or undocumented deaths, especially given increasing attention to similar exhumation cases in parts of eastern Kenya in recent years.

The postmortem exercise is expected to continue for several days due to the number of samples and the complexity of forensic processing required before conclusive reports can be released.

Authorities have emphasized that no definitive cause of death or identities have yet been confirmed pending completion of the autopsy reports.
