The African Union Commission has strongly condemned the killing of at least 162 civilians during a deadly attack in Woro village, Kwara State, Nigeria, describing the incident as a heinous and barbaric act that violates fundamental human rights and threatens peace and security on the continent.
The attack occurred on Tuesday when armed assailants stormed Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area, leaving scores of residents dead and causing widespread destruction, in what has been described as one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent times.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he received the news with deep shock and profound sorrow, noting that the targeting of innocent civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances.
Youssouf condemned the violence in the strongest possible terms, stressing that such acts undermine national stability and regional security while inflicting immense suffering on communities already facing multiple challenges.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms and manifestations, emphasizing the need for sustained collective action to defeat such threats.
The AUC Chairperson extended sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, expressing solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
He further assured Nigerian authorities of the African Union’s continued support in efforts to restore peace, strengthen security, and protect civilians from further attacks.
The Woro attack has heightened concerns about the spread of extremist violence into new areas of Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for enhanced security operations and intelligence-led responses.
As investigations continue, the African Union reiterated its commitment to working with Nigeria and regional partners to address the root causes of terrorism and prevent future atrocities against civilians.
