Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães after opening direct talks with the Magpies over a potential transfer for the Brazil international.
The move represents a change in approach for the Gunners, who had previously explored the possibility of signing the midfielder through intermediaries. Arsenal are now engaging directly with Newcastle as they assess the conditions required to complete a deal.
Guimarães has become one of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s priority targets as the club looks to strengthen its midfield options. The 28-year-old is highly rated for his ability to control games, win possession and contribute both defensively and creatively.
The Brazilian joined Newcastle from French side Lyon in January 2022 for a fee reported to be around £40 million and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important players. He later became a key leader within Eddie Howe’s squad and was named club captain.
Newcastle are reluctant to lose Guimarães, who remains under contract and is considered central to the club’s ambitions. The Magpies are expected to demand a significant transfer fee before considering any proposal from Arsenal.
Reports suggest Arsenal are prepared to invest heavily in the midfielder, although the two clubs are yet to reach an agreement. The valuation of the player remains one of the major issues in negotiations.
Guimarães has previously attracted interest from several top European clubs due to his performances in the Premier League and Champions League. His experience, physicality and technical ability have made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in England.
For Arsenal, securing the Brazilian would add further quality and competition in a midfield department that already includes players such as Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.
The negotiations come as Arsenal continue preparations for another Premier League title challenge, with Arteta looking to build a squad capable of competing for domestic and European honours.
However, the transfer is still at the discussion stage, with no agreement reached between Arsenal and Newcastle. Further negotiations will determine whether Guimarães becomes the latest high-profile arrival at the Emirates Stadium.
