Arrests have been made in connection with the violent disruption of a post-budget civic meeting at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, with Interior officials confirming that suspects identified through CCTV footage are expected to face prosecution.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said security agencies had already detained some individuals linked to the incident, while additional suspects were being tracked down as investigations intensified. He noted that surveillance footage from the cathedral has been central in identifying those involved.

The attack occurred during a public forum bringing together civil society actors, governance experts and members of the public to review the national budget. The meeting was abruptly interrupted when groups of armed individuals forced their way into the cathedral compound, triggering panic among attendees.

According to investigators, the disruption unfolded in coordinated phases, beginning with an initial group arriving on motorbikes and being dispersed by police, before returning later on foot and breaching the venue.

Once inside, the assailants caused chaos, scattering participants and halting proceedings. Reports indicate that some attendees were robbed of personal belongings during the incident, further escalating concern over security at public gatherings.

Security officers stationed at the venue responded as the situation escalated, working to restore order while attempting to prevent further access to the conference area. A gunshot was also reported outside the premises during the confrontation.

CCTV footage captured during the incident is said to show clear images of suspects, including facial details and motorcycle identifiers, which investigators are using to map movements and establish identities.

Authorities have described the footage as key evidence, with detectives analysing it frame by frame to trace individuals and determine the level of coordination behind the attack.

Murkomen has condemned the incident, terming it unacceptable and warning that those responsible will be held accountable regardless of affiliation or background.

He added that security agencies are expanding operations aimed at dismantling organised criminal groups believed to be behind similar disruptions in urban centres.

Civil society organisations and legal groups have strongly criticised the attack, calling it a serious threat to civic participation and freedom of assembly in the country.

Church leadership has also raised concern over rising insecurity in public spaces, urging authorities to ensure places of worship remain safe for community activities.

Investigators say follow-up operations are ongoing, with more arrests expected as additional suspects are identified through digital evidence and witness accounts.

Officials have confirmed that all those implicated will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete, as pressure mounts for swift justice.

The incident has intensified debate over urban security and the growing use of organised gangs in disrupting public events, with authorities promising tighter controls going forward.
