Ann Wambui Kimone

Ann Wambui Kimone has become a beacon of hope for children with disabilities in Mowlem, Nairobi initiative started during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born in Murang'a County now lives in Dandora Baraka, where she founded the Wise Kids Learning Centre in 2020. The school provides learning opportunities for children often rejected or neglected by families and society at large.

Kimone says she was motivated to start the school after seeing firsthand how children with disabilities are overlooked and denied specialized care that they need for development and well-being.

Currently, the school accommodates 60 children, but Kimone remains determined to expand if space allows, saying that more students would be a “boost” to her mission.

She personally searches the streets for abandoned or deserted children, emphasizing that she does not discriminate by age, taking in children from infancy to older ages.

Despite her dedication, Kimone struggles with basic resources. She pays rent for the school premises, provides food and water, and often faces challenges in meeting the daily needs of the children.

Teachers at the centre also face limitations, with some volunteering their time despite low salaries to ensure that all children continue learning.

Kimone has called on the community and society at large to support her by contributing essential commodities and helping cover rent, food, and other necessities.

She is also appealing for assistance in acquiring a larger space or land to accommodate all the children, citing overcrowding as a major barrier to expanding her services.

Through her efforts, Kimone continues to inspire, driven by love for the children and the hope that every child, regardless of ability, can access education and care.
