An aircraft carrying 36 people safely evacuated after it veered off the runway at Mandera Airstrip in northeastern Kenya during landing operations on Thursday morning.
The flight, which had departed from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, was operating a domestic service when it experienced a runway excursion shortly after touchdown. The plane carried 32 passengers and four crew members.
Aviation authorities confirmed that the aircraft, an Embraer-operated domestic jet, lost alignment while landing and left the runway before coming to a stop in vegetation adjacent to the airstrip.
Emergency response teams stationed at the facility were quickly deployed and managed to reach the aircraft within minutes, assisting in the safe evacuation of all passengers and crew on board.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, with officials describing the evacuation as orderly and successful despite the sudden nature of the event.
The Kenya Airports Authority confirmed the incident and stated that standard emergency procedures were activated immediately to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft may have overrun or skidded off the runway due to factors that are still under investigation, including possible runway conditions and landing dynamics.
Aviation safety authorities have launched a formal probe to establish the exact cause of the incident, with technical experts expected to assess the aircraft and runway surface.
Operations at Mandera Airstrip were temporarily disrupted following the incident as the affected area was secured for inspection and recovery work.
