Prime cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi

The government has confirmed that 18 Kenyan citizens who had been enlisted into the Russia-Ukraine war have been successfully rescued and repatriated. Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the individuals were returned after sustained diplomatic efforts and are now receiving support to help them reintegrate into society.

Mudavadi noted that the rescued Kenyans had been drawn into the conflict through deceptive recruitment arrangements, with many believing they were travelling for employment or training opportunities. Upon arrival, they allegedly found themselves coerced into military service under harsh conditions.

The Cabinet Secretary said Kenya is currently engaged in active talks with Russian authorities to facilitate the return of more than 180 other Kenyans believed to be stranded in military camps or conflict zones. He added that the discussions are progressing, with a framework in place to allow affected citizens to be handed over to Kenyan diplomatic officials for repatriation.

In parallel, the government is working with Ukrainian authorities to trace and assist any Kenyans who may have been detained or caught up on the opposing side of the conflict. Kenyan missions in the region have also intensified outreach to nationals, urging them to register for consular assistance.

The government has renewed its warning to citizens against accepting unverified overseas job offers, particularly in countries affected by conflict. Authorities say investigations are ongoing into recruitment agents suspected of luring Kenyans abroad under false pretences, with enforcement action expected against those found culpable.
