World TB Day

Kenya today joined the world in commemorating World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, emphasizing that the contagious illness is both preventable and curable.
The Ministry of Health is leading the celebrations, urging for increased awareness and promising to improve preventative measures and provide access to treatment.
TB is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), and it most often affects the lungs. TB is spread through the air when people with lung TB cough, sneeze, or spit. A person needs to inhale only a few germs to become infected.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the country is among the countries with the greatest tuberculosis burden.
World TB Day is celebrated annually on March 24th to raise public awareness about the health, social, and economic consequences of TB and to encourage action to end the global TB epidemic.
Themed “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver," this year’s celebrations emphasize the need for stronger commitments, increased investment, and tangible results in the fight against TB.
Amid worldwide concerns about budget cuts, the celebrations provide a forum for the ministry and partners to reflect on progress and devise strategies to close the financing deficit.
Meanwhile, WHO is appealing for an immediate commitment of resources to safeguard and sustain tuberculosis (TB) care and support services for people in need across regions and countries.
