World Maritime Day: Accessibility and Inclusion

The Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act of 2025 is expected to revolutionize accessibility and employment for Persons with disabilities, a move that is particularly significant as we mark World Maritime Day.

The legislation establishes a clear framework to ensure PWDs can fully participate in society, with a special emphasis on employment and barrier-free environments.

The Act mandates that all sectors, including the vital maritime industry, must become more inclusive. As the largest sector operating in the ocean space, shipping is uniquely positioned to lead in this area. It collaborates closely with tourism, fisheries, and marine research, offering a wide range of job opportunities that can be made accessible to people with disabilities.

The new law introduces several key requirements to ensure inclusion. First, it requires barrier-free environments. All new and existing buildings, roads, and public spaces must be made accessible to allow for independent navigation.

This also extends to social amenities and digital platforms, requiring employers to ensure their websites and communication systems are usable by everyone.

Second, the Act mandates accommodations in the workplace. Employers are now required to provide "reasonable adjustments," including making physical facilities accessible, restructuring jobs, or modifying work schedules.

They must also provide or adapt equipment and assistive devices, and offer financial allowances to help cover personal expenses, such as hiring a personal assistant.

Finally, the Act establishes clear penalties for non-compliance, reinforcing the government's commitment to protecting the rights of people with disabilities.

By mandating these changes, the government is not just creating new laws; it is building a more equitable and inclusive society where people with disabilities have the right to full participation and the opportunity to contribute their talents to every sector, including the maritime industry.
