WAYNE ROONEY: This Season Could Be “Now Or Never” For Arteta at Arsenal
Wayne Rooney has warned that this season could be decisive for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, insisting the Spaniard must deliver silverware to justify the club’s heavy investment in recent years. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England and Manchester United captain said Arsenal have backed Arteta extensively in the transfer market, and now the pressure is firmly on him to turn progress into trophies.
Rooney noted that while Arsenal have been strong contenders in the Premier League under Arteta, they have so far fallen short of winning major honours. He stressed that the club’s board and supporters will expect more than just improvement on the pitch, highlighting that the time has come for Arteta to translate potential into tangible success. Rooney suggested that the upcoming campaign could define the manager’s long-term future at the Emirates.
The former striker also criticised Arsenal’s approach in their recent 1–0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, arguing that the Gunners missed a golden chance to make a statement. According to Rooney, Arsenal were too cautious against Arne Slot's side and lacked the bravery to take control of the match, a decision that cost them valuable points in a fiercely competitive title race.
With Arsenal also pushing for success in Europe, Rooney pointed out that competitions like the Europa League represent a realistic chance for Arteta to cement his resurgence project with a trophy. He concluded that while Arsenal as a club may not be under immediate crisis, for Arteta personally, this season could be “now or never” in proving himself as a top-level manager capable of delivering major honours.
