The former Harambee Stars captain confirmed his decision in 2026, marking the close of a journey that began from humble beginnings in Nairobi.
Wanyama revealed that persistent knee problems played a significant role in his decision to retire, having endured discomfort for several years before opting to step away from the game. Wanyama rose to international prominence during his time at Celtic, where he became the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League. His memorable goal against Barcelona in 2012 remains one of the most iconic moments in his career.
Following his success in Scotland, he moved to the English Premier League, starring for Southampton before earning a high-profile transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. At Spurs, he was part of the squad that reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.
Wanyama later continued his career in Major League Soccer with CF Montréal, where he played a leadership role and captained the team to the Canadian Championship title in 2021, further cementing his legacy abroad.
On the international stage, Wanyama was a key figure for Harambee Stars, earning over 60 caps and captaining the side during major tournaments, including the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He initially retired from international football in 2021 before making a brief return.
Over the course of his career, Wanyama made hundreds of professional appearances and was widely respected for his physical presence, leadership, and tactical discipline in midfield. His influence extended beyond the pitch, inspiring a generation of young footballers in Kenya.
Tributes have poured in from his former clubs, teammates, and fans across the world, with many recognizing his immense contribution to both club and country as one of Kenya’s most successful football exports.
