The United States has said it will not recognise Somaliland as an independent state, even after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signalled support for the move, President Donald Trump has stated. Washington’s position maintains support for Somalia’s territorial integrity despite growing debate following Israel’s decision.
Israel on Friday became the first country to formally recognise Somaliland, the self-declared republic that broke away from Somalia in 1991. The move marked a major diplomatic breakthrough for Somaliland, which has enjoyed relative stability but lacked international recognition for more than three decades.
The announcement drew swift condemnation from Somalia, which said Israel’s action violated its sovereignty and international law. Mogadishu warned that the recognition could destabilise the Horn of Africa region and undermine ongoing efforts to promote peace and unity.
The African Union also criticised Israel’s decision, reiterating its long-standing position that Somaliland remains part of Somalia. The continental body cautioned that unilateral recognition of breakaway regions threatens regional stability and sets a dangerous precedent for Africa’s borders.
Despite Israel’s move, the US signalled it would not follow suit, underscoring that recognition of Somaliland is not under consideration at this time. The differing positions have heightened diplomatic tensions, with Somaliland celebrating a historic milestone while regional and international actors express concern over its wider implications.
