United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate end to the ongoing violence in Sudan, warning that the conflict is “spiralling out of control” as the humanitarian situation worsens across the country.
Speaking on November 4, 2025, Guterres urged the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cease hostilities and engage in negotiations to end what he described as a “nightmare of violence.” He said hundreds of thousands of civilians, particularly in the besieged city of El Fasher in North Darfur, are trapped and facing hunger, disease, and death amid relentless fighting.
The UN chief decried widespread violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, citing reports of mass killings, sexual violence, and looting. He called for the international community to stop the flow of weapons into Sudan and to push for accountability for atrocities committed during the conflict.
According to UN reports, the RSF has captured all five state capitals in Darfur following months of siege operations, leaving millions displaced and critical infrastructure destroyed. Guterres warned that the situation represents one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century and appealed for urgent global action to protect civilians and restore peace.
He reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, the opening of humanitarian corridors, and the resumption of dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting political settlement to end Sudan’s devastating civil war.
