The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has reported that at least 21 people have been executed in Iran and more than 4,000 others arrested since the escalation of the Middle East conflict.

According to the UN rights agency, the figures relate to developments recorded since the outbreak of hostilities in the region in 2026, with Iran experiencing heightened internal security operations alongside regional tensions.

The OHCHR states that the executions include individuals convicted on national security-related charges, including allegations linked to protests and security offences.

It further reports that a large number of those arrested were detained under broad security provisions, with the total exceeding 4,000 across various provinces.

The UN agency says some detainees are being held in connection with alleged opposition activity, while others are linked to accusations related to espionage or political dissent.

The report notes that judicial proceedings in some of these cases have been expedited, with death sentences issued under charges applied in national security contexts.

The OHCHR expresses concern that the scale of arrests has expanded significantly in parallel with the regional conflict, reflecting increased internal security enforcement.

It states that some detainees have reportedly been denied access to legal representation, although detailed case-by-case verification remains limited.

The agency also highlights concerns about due process in cases involving capital punishment, particularly where trials are conducted under accelerated procedures.

The UN rights office has called for a halt to further executions, citing international human rights standards governing the use of the death penalty.

It has also urged Iranian authorities to ensure that all detainees are treated in accordance with fair trial guarantees under international law.

The report emphasizes that the data reflects information verified through UN monitoring channels and partner human rights reporting mechanisms available at the time of publication.

It notes that the situation remains under ongoing review as the conflict continues to evolve and additional information becomes available.
