President Ruto Hosts Duchess of Edinburgh at State House Nairobi

President William Ruto on Wednesday welcomed Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, at State House during her official two-day visit to Kenya. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between Kenya and the United Kingdom, particularly on women’s leadership, peace, and security.

The discussions highlighted the UK–Kenya Strategic Partnership, with both sides emphasizing joint efforts to promote women’s meaningful participation in governance, peacebuilding, and decision-making processes at national and community levels.

President Ruto acknowledged the pivotal role of women in fostering social cohesion and development, noting that empowering women strengthens both local communities and national stability. He highlighted ongoing initiatives under Kenya’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security as a framework for advancing these goals.

The Duchess of Edinburgh underscored the importance of women’s leadership, describing it as central to peace, economic growth, and societal resilience. She reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting policies and programmes that elevate women’s influence in political, economic, and social spheres.

Both leaders discussed collaborative measures to address gender-based challenges, including preventing conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence, promoting community resilience, and ensuring that women have access to leadership opportunities at all levels.

The Duchess is scheduled to meet senior Kenyan women leaders, business executives, and entrepreneurs to explore strategies for economic empowerment and inclusive growth. Her engagements aim to highlight the impact of women’s participation in strengthening communities and promoting development.

Her itinerary also includes visits to grassroots women peacebuilders who have been active in conflict prevention and local reconciliation initiatives. These meetings are intended to share best practices and identify areas for enhanced cooperation between Kenyan and UK stakeholders.

President Ruto and the Duchess discussed plans to support initiatives that enhance regional peace and security, including leveraging Kenya’s experience in integrating women into peace processes and community development projects.

The visit reflects the broader UK commitment to promoting women’s rights and leadership in East Africa, aligning with global objectives under the Women, Peace and Security framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prior to arriving in Kenya, the Duchess visited Somalia, where she engaged leaders and community actors on similar themes, including protecting women and girls from conflict-related abuses and supporting local peacebuilding initiatives, emphasizing continuity and regional collaboration.
