Thailand’s royal household has announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha at the age of 47, bringing to an end more than three years of intensive medical care following her collapse in late 2022.
The princess, widely known as Princess Pa, was the eldest child of King Vajiralongkorn and one of the most prominent members of Thailand’s royal family. Her public profile extended beyond ceremonial duties into law, diplomacy and social justice initiatives.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha collapsed in December 2022 while exercising and training her dogs for a competition in Nakhon Ratchasima. She was initially treated locally before being transferred to Bangkok for specialist medical care.
Royal medical updates at the time indicated that she suffered a serious cardiac event that caused prolonged oxygen deprivation and led to severe complications. Her condition left her unconscious and dependent on advanced medical support.
For three and a half years, the princess remained under continuous treatment at a leading Bangkok hospital as doctors monitored her condition and attempted long-term recovery interventions.
In the months leading to her death, official updates indicated that her health had deteriorated further due to complications affecting multiple organs. Medical teams continued treatment as her condition remained critical.
The Bureau of the Royal Household confirmed that Princess Bajrakitiyabha died on the evening of June 11, marking one of the most significant losses for Thailand’s monarchy in recent years.
Born in Bangkok in December 1978, the princess received an extensive education in Thailand and abroad and later pursued a professional career in law.
She served in Thailand’s Office of the Attorney General and later held diplomatic assignments, including service as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria and representation in regional international institutions.
Beyond government service, Princess Bajrakitiyabha became known internationally for work focused on legal reform, access to justice and programmes supporting women involved in correctional systems.
Within Thailand, she maintained an active role in royal projects and charitable programmes centred on rehabilitation, education and social welfare.
Her prolonged illness had drawn national attention and led to continued public concern about the future responsibilities and public role of senior members of Thailand’s royal family.
Following confirmation of her death, preparations began for royal funeral rites and national mourning observances, with ceremonies expected to follow long-established traditions of Thailand’s royal household.
