Gideon Sitelu Konchellah, the former Member of Parliament for Kilgoris Constituency, has died at Nairobi Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to confirmation from his family and medical sources. Reports indicate he had been receiving treatment following a period of illness that began in late 2025.

Konchellah was a long-serving Kenyan politician who represented Kilgoris Constituency in Narok County in multiple parliamentary terms. He first entered Parliament in the early 2000s and became a prominent political figure in the region, known for his influence in Maasai politics and constituency-level development engagements.

He later served in the National Assembly across different political periods, including during the administrations of Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, aligning at various times with political formations such as the Party of National Unity, the United Republican Party, and later the Jubilee Party.

During his early parliamentary career, he was also appointed Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons in the final years of the Kibaki government, a position linked to national identity registration and immigration policy administration.

Konchellah was re-elected to Parliament in the 2017 general election after a competitive race in Kilgoris, where he defeated long-time rival Julius Sunkuli. The election result was later challenged in court, but he initially retained the seat before subsequent legal proceedings altered the position.

His time in Parliament included participation in committees dealing with labour, public works, transport, and social welfare, where he contributed to legislative review and oversight functions. He was also involved in constituency development initiatives focused on infrastructure, education, and access to public services in Kilgoris.

In 2018, the Supreme Court issued orders relating to the contested 2017 Kilgoris parliamentary seat, temporarily staying electoral decisions while legal appeals were considered, reflecting the prolonged nature of the dispute.

Beyond parliamentary work, Konchellah was an active participant in regional political negotiations within Narok County, often engaging in coalition-building efforts and community leadership discussions among Maa-speaking communities.

He was born in the early 1950s in Kilgoris area, a town located in Narok County near the Maasai Mara ecosystem, a region with strong pastoral and agricultural economic activity.

Kilgoris Constituency, which he represented, is one of the key administrative and economic zones in Narok County, with its population largely dependent on farming, livestock rearing, and trade.

His political career was closely intertwined with the broader evolution of multiparty politics in Kenya, spanning from the early 2000s through the 2010s and into the current decade.

Over the years, he became known for navigating shifting party alliances, a common feature of Kenyan electoral politics, moving through multiple coalitions as national political landscapes changed.

Following news of his death, political leaders from Narok County and across the country have issued condolences, describing him as a long-serving leader who played a significant role in Kilgoris representation and local governance.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in consultation with local leaders and government representatives, as tributes continue to emerge from across the political spectrum.

His passing marks the end of a long political career that spanned parliamentary service, ministerial responsibility, and active involvement in regional political leadership in southwestern Kenya.
