UK Accuses Russia Of Covert Submarine Operation Near Critical Undersea Infrastructure

Russia rejects UK Secretary of State for Defense John Healey’s claims that Russian submarines are posing a threat to undersea cables in the Atlantic Ocean.
The United Kingdom has accused Russia of conducting a covert submarine operation near critical undersea infrastructure in waters north of the country. The move has sparked concerns over the safety of vital energy and communication networks.
British Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that three Russian submarines were detected operating close to undersea cables and pipelines. He described the activity as “covert” and highlighted the strategic risks posed to essential infrastructure.
The submarines reportedly included one Akula-class attack submarine and two specialised vessels from Russia’s Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI). These vessels are capable of mapping and potentially interfering with underwater infrastructure.
UK forces deployed a rapid response to monitor the submarines’ movements. The operation involved a Royal Navy frigate, support tanker, and long-range maritime patrol aircraft, which maintained continuous surveillance of the vessels.
The detected Russian submarines operated for over a month in the North Atlantic, staying within the UK’s exclusive economic zone and allied maritime areas. At no point did they enter British territorial waters, according to Defence Ministry officials.
Healey stated that the submarines were observed near key undersea infrastructure, including cables that carry internet traffic and pipelines transporting electricity, oil, and gas. These networks are critical to both national security and global connectivity.
The Royal Navy and allied forces, including Norway, tracked the submarines 24/7. The presence of the UK and allied vessels reportedly forced the Russian submarines to retreat without causing damage.
Officials emphasised that the monitoring operation also involved continuous electronic surveillance and communication with Russian authorities, making them aware that their movements were being observed.
The incident underscores growing concerns over the vulnerability of undersea infrastructure, which carries more than 99% of international data traffic. Experts have warned that submarines could potentially tap or disrupt communications if left unchecked.
This operation is part of a broader pattern of increased Russian naval activity in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Defence analysts see it as a signal of Russia’s expanding interest in undersea strategic capabilities.
Healey also issued a warning to Moscow, stating that any attempt to damage or interfere with undersea networks would “not be tolerated and will have serious consequences.” The UK framed the disclosure as both a deterrent and a demonstration of readiness.
