Bobi Wine has accused the government of targeting police officers who had been assigned to his campaign during the recent election period in the country.
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, said nine officers who had been deployed to guard him were presented before a police disciplinary court and later dismissed from the Uganda Police Force.
According to the opposition leader, the officers were accused by authorities of helping him escape from his residence during a security operation that followed the country’s recent elections.
Wine rejected the accusations, saying the officers were unfairly punished for actions they did not commit. He described the move as politically motivated and aimed at intimidating members of the security forces.
He said the officers had been assigned to his campaign security team during the election period but were later accused of neglect of duty after authorities claimed he fled his home during a police and military raid.
Wine further argued that some of the officers had already been withdrawn from duty shortly before the alleged escape incident, raising questions about the basis of the charges against them.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions following the presidential election in Uganda, where incumbent leader Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner.
After the election, Wine said security forces raided his home in Magere near Kampala, prompting him to go into hiding amid concerns over his safety.
The opposition leader has called for accountability over the dismissal of the officers, insisting that security personnel should not face punishment for political reasons as tensions between the opposition and the government continue.
