Ugandan police have dismissed reports alleging that opposition leader Bobi Wine was abducted overnight and taken to an unknown location, describing the claims as false and inflammatory.
In a statement issued on Saturday, police said the reports circulating on social and mainstream media were misleading and aimed at causing unnecessary public alarm.
The response followed assertions by the National Unity Platform, Bobi Wine’s party, that security personnel had surrounded his residence and that his whereabouts were unclear.
Opposition sources alleged that armed forces were involved in an overnight operation at his home, claims that have not been independently verified.
Police maintained that no such abduction took place and insisted that security agencies acted within the law during the election period.
The incident comes amid heightened political tension following Uganda’s general election, with opposition figures disputing provisional results.
Authorities have urged the public to rely on official communication channels and avoid spreading unverified information.
The situation remains closely watched as competing accounts from the government and opposition continue to emerge.
