Uganda’s electoral commission announces the presidential elections results in Uganda

Uganda’s long-serving president Yoweri Museveni has taken a commanding early lead in provisional presidential election results, securing about 76 percent of the vote, according to figures released by the Electoral Commission from a significant portion of polling stations counted so far .

His closest challenger, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, is trailing with roughly 20 percent of the vote, while the remaining share is split among other candidates. The results remain partial, with final tallies yet to be officially declared .

Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is seeking to extend his rule for another term, a move that would further cement his nearly four decades at the helm of the East African nation. His campaign has emphasized stability and continuity, particularly on security and economic management .

The opposition, however, has raised serious concerns about the electoral environment. Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform has stated that security forces have surrounded his residence in Kampala, effectively restricting his movement, a situation the party has described as house arrest. Security agencies have denied issuing any formal detention order, but have acknowledged maintaining a presence around his home .

The election period has been marked by widespread logistical and technical challenges. Voting delays were reported in several parts of the country due to malfunctioning biometric machines and late delivery of materials, particularly in urban opposition strongholds .

Authorities also imposed an internet shutdown during and immediately after polling, a measure the government said was necessary to safeguard national security and prevent misinformation. Critics argue the move hindered transparency and the ability of citizens and observers to independently verify results .

Security incidents were reported in multiple locations, with clashes between security forces and civilians attempting to monitor or protest the vote. Human rights groups and media reports indicated fatalities and injuries linked to election-related violence, though full details remain unclear .

International observers and civil society organizations have expressed concern over restrictions on political freedoms, media access, and the broader pre-election climate. Calls have been made for restraint by security forces and for the Electoral Commission to ensure transparency as counting continues .

The Electoral Commission is expected to announce final certified results in the coming days. Opposition leaders have signaled they may pursue legal challenges once the process is concluded, setting the stage for a potentially contentious post-election period in Uganda .
