UEFA has temporarily suspended Gianluca Prestianni due to the situation that arose with Vinicius Jr.

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has officially opened a disciplinary investigation into allegations of discriminatory behaviour involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni. The probe follows an incident during a UEFA Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid on 17 February 2026.

The controversy erupted during the first-leg encounter when Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior reported to the referee that Prestianni had directed discriminatory language toward him. The Brazilian winger immediately alerted match officials, triggering UEFA’s established anti-racism protocol.

Play was temporarily halted for several minutes as officials assessed the situation. The stoppage followed standard procedures designed to address allegations of racist or discriminatory conduct in UEFA competitions, underscoring the seriousness with which such matters are treated at the European level.

Shortly after the match, UEFA confirmed that an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector had been appointed to examine the allegations under Article 14 of its Disciplinary Regulations, which governs cases of discriminatory behaviour. The regulation provides strict guidelines and outlines potential sanctions for proven offences.

As the investigation began, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposed a provisional one-match suspension on Prestianni. The temporary ban rules him out of Benfica’s return leg in Madrid but does not constitute a final judgment on the matter.

UEFA clarified that the provisional measure is “without prejudice,” meaning it is precautionary while the investigation continues. The disciplinary panel will review match reports, video footage, and any additional evidence before reaching a final decision.

Under Article 14, a confirmed case of discriminatory conduct can result in a minimum 10-match suspension in UEFA club competitions. However, the exact length of any sanction will depend on the panel’s findings once the investigation concludes.

Prestianni and his club, S.L. Benfica, have denied the accusations, maintaining that no racist language was used. On the other side, Real Madrid players publicly supported Vinícius Júnior, reinforcing his complaint and calling for firm action.

UEFA has stated that further details will be communicated once the disciplinary process is complete. Until then, the case remains under active review, with European football awaiting a final ruling that could carry significant consequences for both player and club.
