Mount Kenya UDA allied MPs at a joint briefing today
Mount Kenya lawmakers allied to the ruling United Democratic Alliance have intensified pressure on Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan, rejecting his apology over controversial remarks made in Mombasa and demanding his immediate resignation from the party leadership.
The MPs accused Hassan Omar of engaging in ethnic profiling against the Kikuyu community, saying his comments were inflammatory, divisive and dangerous to national cohesion.
“An apology cannot erase or excuse calculated ethnic profiling. The inflammatory remarks made by honorable Omar in Mombasa were targeted, vilifying and scapegoated the Kikuyu community under the guise of addressing historical land injustices.”
The legislators said they were speaking with “one clear and unequivocal voice,” insisting that Kenya’s constitutional order guarantees every citizen the right to live, work, own property and conduct business freely in any part of the country without intimidation or discrimination.
“We will not sit back and watch anyone profiling people from the Kikuyu community or any other community in this country. Kenya is a constitutional democracy where every citizen has the right to live, work, own property, and do business anywhere across the 47 counties without fear of being targeted.”
The leaders dismissed Hassan Omar’s clarification and apology issued on Sunday, saying they considered it insufficient and insincere. Instead, they demanded his “immediate and unconditional resignation” as UDA Secretary General.
“We do not want explanations. We have rejected the half-hearted apology. We demand nothing less than the immediate and unconditional resignation of honorable Hassan Omar as the secretary general of the UDA party.”
The MPs further warned that they could reconsider their continued membership in UDA if action is not taken, directly urging President William Ruto to intervene in the dispute before it escalates into a deeper political fallout within the party.
“If Omar doesn’t resign, we cannot continue to be members of UDA. We must petition the president so that at least he can action.”
The lawmakers argued that similar cases involving ethnic profiling had previously led to resignations by public officials and insisted the same standard should apply within the ruling party leadership.
They also declared that they no longer had confidence in Hassan Omar’s ability to continue serving as Secretary General, saying his conduct and public statements had undermined trust among elected leaders from the Mt Kenya region.
“We are not comfortable as you continue sitting as our secretary general. Enough is enough. Pack your things, leave our party. We have other competent people who can take us to the next level.”
The MPs linked the controversy to growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that the party risks alienating a key voting bloc if decisive action is not taken.
“As we approach 2027 elections, we cannot have you as our secretary general. You don’t even know how to conduct yourself.”
The latest standoff exposes widening cracks within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, with analysts warning that internal divisions over regional politics and succession battles are increasingly becoming visible within the ruling alliance.
