The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has concluded the tallying of votes from the recent by-elections held across several counties, with the results reaffirming the political supremacy of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The ODM delivered expected wins in its traditional Nyanza base, successfully defending two parliamentary seats.
In Kasipul constituency, Homa Bay County, Boyd Were (ODM) was declared the MP-elect, garnering a decisive 16,819 votes to defeat his closest competitor, independent candidate Philip Aroko, who received 8,476 votes. He succeeds his father, the late Ong’ondo Were, whose tragic death necessitated the by-election.
Similarly, the party's strength was evident in Siaya, where Moses Omondi Okoth (ODM) clinched the Ugunja MP seat with 9,447 votes, and in Magarini, Harry Gharama Kombe secured (ODM).
The ruling party, UDA, secured a range of victories, including a hard-fought parliamentary contest that underscored its growing influence outside its core regions.
The most notable win came in Mbeere North, where Leonard Muriuki wa Muthende (UDA) was declared MP-elect at the Siakago Tallying Centre.
Wa Muthende achieved a slender victory with 15,802 votes, narrowly surpassing Newton Kariuki Ndwiga of the Democratic Party (DP), who managed 15,308 votes.
In Mandera, Ahmed Maalim Hassan (UDA) won the Banisa MP seat with a commanding 10,431 votes.
Furthermore, UDA candidates secured the Baringo Senate seat and the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats in Samburu North (Isabella Leshimpiro), Chesumei, and multiple wards in Turkana and Kajiado.
While UDA and ODM dominated the headline races, other parties demonstrated their regional strength.
The Wiper Democratic Front successfully defended its turf in Machakos County, where Antony Kisoi was declared the winner of the Mumbuni North Ward by-election with 3,849 votes. The victory reinforced the party’s significant presence in the Lower Eastern region.
Elsewhere, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)'s Jackson Mogusu won the Nyansiongo Ward by-election in Nyamira with 2,759 votes, and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP)'s Douglas Twala Masikonde secured the Narok Town Ward seat.
The opposition's UPA party also secured Nyamaiya ward in Nyamira County as Chris Osiemo garnered 4,790 votes, beating the ruling UDA's Thomas Nyandieka, who scored 1,357.
The by-election results collectively serve as a fresh barometer of public opinion, largely confirming the standing of the UDA-led administration and the ODM-led opposition coalition.
