A major diplomatic push was underway on Monday after reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held direct talks amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The discussions came as fears grew that the conflict in Lebanon could expand into a wider regional war.

According to multiple reports, Hezbollah has indicated through intermediaries that it is prepared to accept a full and immediate ceasefire with Israel. Lebanese officials said the group was willing to halt attacks if Israel also stopped military operations and refrained from launching further strikes on Beirut.

The development marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, as previous negotiations had been complicated by demands linked to Israeli military activity inside Lebanon. Sources close to the talks said Hezbollah’s latest position appeared aimed at preventing further escalation and avoiding a large-scale assault on the Lebanese capital.

Trump later announced that he had held what he described as a “very productive” call with Netanyahu and claimed progress had been made toward de-escalation. In a public statement, the U.S. president said Israeli troops would not move into Beirut and that forces allegedly heading toward the city had already been turned back.

“I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut... I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop.” - President Donald J. Trump 🇺🇸

The U.S. president also claimed that Hezbollah had agreed to stop all attacks against Israel and that Israel would, in return, halt planned military actions against the group. Trump said the understandings were reached through discussions involving intermediaries communicating with Hezbollah.

The announcement came only hours after Netanyahu ordered strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, particularly the Dahieh district, following rocket and drone attacks launched from Lebanon. Israel said the operation targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and was a response to repeated ceasefire violations.

Thousands of residents fled southern Beirut after Israel issued warnings of impending strikes, causing major traffic congestion across the Lebanese capital. The scenes highlighted growing fears that the conflict could spiral into one of the most dangerous confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah in recent years.

Despite Trump’s ceasefire claims, reports indicated that missile launches from Lebanon were detected shortly after his announcement, prompting air raid alerts in parts of northern Israel. The developments underscored the fragile nature of any potential agreement and the challenges facing mediators attempting to secure calm.

The crisis has also become closely linked to broader regional diplomacy involving Iran. Tehran has reportedly insisted that any wider ceasefire arrangements must include Lebanon, while warning that continued Israeli attacks could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

International observers say the coming hours could prove decisive for the region. With Washington, Jerusalem and Beirut all engaged in intensive discussions, attention remains focused on whether the reported understandings can hold and prevent another major escalation along the Israel-Lebanon border.
