Globe roundabout in Nairobi Kenya
Traffic flow at Globe Roundabout along Thika Road has been fully restored following the completion of emergency repair works on a section of the Nairobi River bridge, authorities have confirmed.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the damage was caused by heavy rains and flooding that weakened part of the bridge structure, prompting immediate closure of sections of the roundabout to allow urgent repairs.
The authority had earlier implemented traffic diversions and partial closures to facilitate rehabilitation works, leading to significant congestion along the busy corridor connecting the city centre and surrounding areas.
Motorists were redirected through alternative routes including the Globe Overpass, Wangari Maathai Road and Ring Road Ngara as engineers worked to stabilise and reinforce the affected bridge section.
KeNHA deployed traffic marshals and worked alongside police officers to manage movement and minimise disruption during the repair period, which lasted several days.
Following the completion of the works, the agency confirmed that the bridge is now structurally sound and safe for use, allowing for the resumption of normal traffic flow at the key junction.
The reopening is expected to ease congestion on Thika Road and surrounding routes, restoring smoother access into Nairobi’s central business district as authorities continue to monitor infrastructure amid ongoing rains.
