The 2023 African Para Games
The 2023 African Para Games are scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, spanning from September 3 to September 12. The inaugural edition of these games was announced by Andrew Parsons, the President of the International Paralympic Committee, during his visit to Ghana in January 2022.
The emblem and slogan for the event, "Para Sports Inspire a Better Africa," were unveiled in November 2022. These games actively support the IPC's #WalkInMyShoe initiative, which strives to eliminate the stigma associated with Para sports within African nations.
The sports featured in the African Para Games include Para Athletics, Para powerlifting, Para-Taekwondo, Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Goalball, Sitting Volleyball, and Blind football.
The African Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Ghana National Paralympic Committee (GNCP) are jointly organizing the event. The APC functions as the governing body for para-sports across the African continent, while the GNCP serves as the national governing body for para-sports in Ghana.
Numerous organizations are providing support for the games, including the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the government of Ghana, and the Ghana Olympic Committee. As the global governing body for para-sports, the IPC is assisting the APC and GNCP in the technical aspects of organizing the event.
These games are anticipated to significantly elevate the status of para-sports in Africa. They offer a platform for African athletes to compete on an international stage, contributing to heightened awareness and recognition of para-sports throughout the continent.
