The first contingent of Team Kenya for the 25th Summer Deaflympics is scheduled to depart for Tokyo, Japan, today.
The quadrennial multi-sport event is slated to run from November 15th to 26th. The team, which includes athletes, officials, interpreters, and medics, will represent the country in five major disciplines.
This number is lower than the initial plan of twelve due to budgetary constraints encountered during the preparation phase.
Despite the reduction in size, Kenya, a country traditionally regarded as a powerhouse in the competition, will still field competitors in athletics, women's basketball, men's handball, golf, and swimming.
Regrettably, teams for disciplines such as women's football, bowling, badminton, tennis, table tennis, cycling, and women's volleyball had to be cut from the final squad.
The team's official, Dan Kuria, while addressing media, expressed high confidence in the remaining athletes following a rigorous residential training camp held in Nairobi since October 19th.
CEO Kuria stated that the team is "ready and well prepared" for the Summer Games, anticipating results that surpass the country's performance in the last Deaflympics in Brazil.
Kenya will be aiming to build on its previous strong showing, which includes its best-ever haul of 24 medals secured during the 2022 Games in Caxias do Sul. The delegation will travel to Tokyo in phased groups over the next few days to ensure timely acclimatization for the athletes before competition begins.
