The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reiterated that all taxpayers must file their 2025 income tax returns by June 30, 2026 at midnight, warning that there will be no extension of the statutory deadline. The agency says the requirement is strictly enforced under Kenyan tax law and applies to all registered PIN holders.

KRA has confirmed that the filing window for the 2025 year of income runs from January 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026, with submissions to be made through the iTax online platform. The requirement covers individuals, businesses, landlords, and employers operating within the tax system.

The authority has stressed that filing is mandatory even for taxpayers who had no income during the year or those whose taxes were fully deducted through PAYE. Such individuals are still required to submit nil returns before the deadline.

According to KRA, failure to comply will result in automatic penalties and possible interest charges, with the agency also empowered to issue default assessments where taxpayers fail to declare their income.

The tax body has warned that default assessments allow it to compute tax liability using available internal data, which may result in higher payable amounts compared to voluntary filing.

KRA has also urged taxpayers not to wait until the last minute, citing recurring system congestion on the iTax platform during peak filing periods in late June.

Officials say early filing reduces the risk of technical delays and ensures smoother processing of returns as the deadline approaches.

The authority has reminded taxpayers to ensure all income sources are correctly declared, including employment income, business earnings, and rental income where applicable.

KRA maintains that compliance with annual filing obligations is a legal requirement for all active PIN holders, regardless of income status during the year.

The filing requirement covers income earned between January 1 and December 31, 2025, which is declared in the 2025 return submitted in 2026.

The iTax system remains the official platform for submission, payment, and processing of returns across the country.

KRA has said it continues to enhance its digital systems to improve compliance monitoring and reduce tax evasion risks through data matching tools.

The agency has maintained that the June 30 deadline is fixed annually under the law, and taxpayers are expected to comply fully to avoid enforcement action.
