Tanzania suffered a major setback in their FIFA World Cup CAF Qualification campaign after falling 1-0 at home to Niger in Group E.
The decisive moment came in the 58th minute when Idrissa Djibrilla converted to hand Niger all three points at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar. Despite Tanzania enjoying home support, they struggled to break down a disciplined Niger defence.
The Taifa Stars had introduced Simon Msuva, Ally Suleiman, and Yahya Omary in the second half to spark their attack, but they could not find a breakthrough. Late fouls by Omary and Suleiman summed up a frustrating evening for the hosts.
With this result, Tanzania remain second in Group E with 10 points after seven matches, while Niger climb to third place with 9 points and a game in hand. Morocco lead the group comfortably with 21 points after seven games.
Although Tanzania are still in the qualifying race, the defeat leaves them under pressure with Morocco looking almost certain to secure top spot and direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
