President William Ruto has announced that the under-construction Talanta City Stadium will officially be named the Raila Odinga International Stadium once completed. The Head of State made the declaration during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations held at Nyayo Stadium, where thousands of citizens gathered for the national event.

The announcement followed Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s public request urging the President to honour former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by naming the new 60,000-seater facility after him. In response, President Ruto paused his address to engage the crowd, asking them directly which name they preferred for the stadium. The resounding chant in support of Raila Odinga prompted the President to affirm that the government would adopt the proposed name.

Ruto told the cheering crowd that he had “heard the voice of Kenyans,” adding that the renaming would take effect once construction of the stadium is complete. The declaration sparked excitement among attendees, many of whom applauded the symbolic move intended to promote national unity and recognise Odinga’s long-standing role in Kenya’s political development.

Talanta City Stadium, located along Ngong Road within the Jamhuri Grounds, is nearing completion and is expected to be ready by March 2026. The facility is part of Kenya’s broader sports infrastructure upgrading plan as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. With modern amenities and expanded capacity, the stadium is projected to become a key sporting and cultural venue upon launch.

Local leaders and national figures have welcomed the President’s gesture, describing it as a historic acknowledgement of Raila Odinga’s contributions to the nation. The official renaming process will follow once the stadium is finalized, marking a significant moment in Kenya’s evolving political landscape and ongoing efforts to strengthen national cohesion.
