Takamoto Katsuta wins the 2026 WRC Safari Rally after beating Adrien Fourmaux,
Takamoto Katsuta of Toyota Gazoo Racing secured a historic victory at the Safari Rally Kenya after a dramatic final day of racing in Naivasha, clinching his maiden win in the World Rally Championship. The Japanese driver delivered a composed performance across the demanding stages of the iconic African rally.
Katsuta, navigated by co-driver Aaron Johnston, held his nerve through the final leg on Sunday to seal the win after four punishing days of competition. The rally tested crews with rough terrain, mud and unpredictable weather conditions in the Great Rift Valley.
The victory marked a breakthrough moment for Katsuta, who has spent several seasons developing within Toyota’s WRC programme. His triumph represents the first WRC win of his career and one of the biggest milestones for the Japanese driver.
Adrien Fourmaux of Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT finished second after a strong and consistent run throughout the rally. Fourmaux kept pressure on the leader during the weekend but ultimately settled for second place.
Third place went to young Finnish driver Sami Pajari, also representing Toyota. Pajari impressed with a steady performance in the difficult Kenyan conditions to complete the podium.
The 2026 edition of the Safari Rally once again proved to be among the toughest events on the championship calendar. Drivers battled rocky roads, deep ruts and sudden weather changes across the Naivasha stages.
Several leading contenders ran into trouble during the demanding Saturday leg, which dramatically reshaped the leaderboard. Mechanical issues and punctures forced multiple front-runners out of contention.
Among those affected were experienced WRC drivers who lost significant time after damaging their cars on the punishing terrain. The situation allowed Katsuta to take control of the rally.
After moving into the lead, Katsuta focused on maintaining a consistent pace rather than pushing aggressively for stage victories. The careful strategy helped him avoid costly mistakes.
The Safari Rally remains one of the most unpredictable rallies in the championship due to its harsh terrain and long stages. Many teams approached the event with caution to preserve their cars.
Katsuta’s victory strengthens Toyota Gazoo Racing’s campaign in the 2026 season and adds another memorable chapter to the history of the Safari Rally in Kenya.
