Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed shock and condemnation following the death of 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo, who was shot during a political rally in Kitengela on Sunday, February 15. The event, part of Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi tour, had drawn thousands of supporters before tensions escalated when police moved in to disperse the crowd.
Eyewitnesses and family members said Vincent was crossing the road after leaving work when he was struck by a bullet through the eye, moments after tear gas was deployed by officers. His body was later identified at the City Mortuary in Nairobi by relatives.
In the aftermath, Senator Sifuna placed responsibility on the police and the administration of President William Ruto, calling the death “senseless and needless.” He offered condolences to the family and pledged to seek justice and accountability for the incident.
The rally, organized by Sifuna’s faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), took place amid heightened tensions within the party and the opposition landscape. Reports indicate that officers used both tear gas and live ammunition, though authorities have not provided a detailed official account. Opposition leaders have accused police of excessive force against participants who were largely peaceful.
Sifuna further criticised what he described as intimidation tactics, insisting that neither violence nor political pressure would deter him or fellow leaders from advocating against injustices. He reaffirmed his commitment to speaking out against government actions perceived as oppressive.
Vincent’s death has intensified calls from civil society and political allies for transparent investigations and for those responsible to face sanctions. Opposition figures warn that the use of force at political gatherings threatens constitutional rights to assembly and expression.
Local communities and political groups are closely monitoring responses from law enforcement and government officials, with the incident sparking renewed debates on policing methods and political freedoms ahead of Kenya’s elections.
