Siaya County Government Pledges Support for Regional Hockey Champions
Nyamira Girls, the East Africa secondary schools' hockey champions from Siaya, are now setting their sights on the global stage after emerging victorious in Rwanda.
According to their coach, Dennis Kigai, the girls have already begun preparations for the World School Games, scheduled to be held in Belgrade, Serbia, in April 2024.
Kigai expressed confidence that with support from the Government and other stakeholders, securing the global trophy would be an attainable goal for these strong and courageous girls.
The school's principal, Mrs. Jesicah Ambasa, who is one of the four hockey coaches training the girls, echoed Kigai's sentiments. She acknowledged the new challenge the girls face as they prepare to compete against tougher opponents in both Africa and the world.
Ambasa recognized the support they received from the Siaya County government ahead of the East African school games in Rwanda and appealed for more government backing.
Hockey team captain, Vivian Akinyi, cited their experience in Rwanda as their greatest motivation and pledged to bring home the continental trophy. She also emphasized that their main challenge as a team is the lack of a proper hockey field and equipment, calling for support from both the government and other well-wishers.
Meanwhile, Siaya County government, led by Governor James Orengo, has committed to supporting Nyamira Girls, the reigning East Africa school games hockey champions, as they prepare for the world schools’ championship in Belgrade next year.
