Dr. Joyce Kithure, the Second Lady of Kenya and spouse to the Deputy President, took part in a major environmental clean‑up exercise in Dandora estate, Nairobi County, on Saturday in a bid to rally community action on sanitation and waste management.
The clean‑up event drew local volunteers, residents and community leaders who joined hands to remove litter, clear public spaces and promote better waste disposal habits in one of Nairobi’s most populous estates.
Speaking at the site, Dr. Kithure urged residents and stakeholders to view cleanliness as a shared responsibility, stressing that government efforts alone are insufficient without active citizen participation.
“Nairobi is our capital city, and its cleanliness reflects who we are as a nation,” she said, calling on every household to extend the culture of hygiene beyond their compounds to streets, markets and public drainage channels.
Dr. Kithure highlighted the link between poor sanitation and the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid, particularly among children, underscoring the health risks of unmanaged waste in urban settlements.
The exercise in Dandora was conducted under the Science Adding Value to the Environment and the Communities Initiative (SaVE), a programme championed by the Second Lady that seeks practical solutions and community‑based innovations to environmental challenges.
During her remarks, she emphasised the need to change individual habits, warning against dumping plastics and other refuse into drainage systems that often lead to blockages and flooding during heavy rains.
Dr. Kithure also announced plans to extend clean‑up drives and environmental awareness campaigns to other parts of Nairobi, including Kawangware, Mathare, Kibra, Korogocho, Mukuru and the Central Business District, as part of efforts to achieve a cleaner and healthier city.
The Second Lady’s engagement comes as local authorities continue to emphasise sanitation and urban cleanliness in Nairobi, with initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable waste management practices across the capital.
