President William Samoei Ruto on Tuesday intensified his development tour of Nairobi with a series of engagements in Kibra and Lang’ata, outlining an ambitious plan to transform the capital through housing, infrastructure and social programmes.

The Head of State inspected the ongoing 4,600-unit Soweto Affordable Housing Project in Lang’ata, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering large-scale housing solutions in urban centres.

Speaking during a public address at Undugu Grounds, Ruto said the transformation of Nairobi would go beyond housing and education, extending to critical infrastructure and essential services.

“And the Members of Parliament of Nairobi, that we must change the face of this Nairobi beyond building schools, and besides building affordable housing, we have also agreed to increase the water that comes to the people of Nairobi,” the President said.

He announced that the government has allocated KSh2 billion to the Ng’ethu water works to boost water supply to the city.

“We have allocated 2 billion shillings to Ng’ethu to ensure that we increase the water reaching Nairobi,” he added.

On transport infrastructure, the President said the government will expand road networks across the capital to eliminate unpaved roads.

“Secondly, we have agreed that we should build 240 kilometers of new roads here in Nairobi so we can ensure we remove mud roads from Nairobi County,” he stated.

The President also outlined plans to enhance security and economic activity through expanded street lighting.

“And number three, we have agreed that between now and the end of the year, we are connecting 40 streetlights to remove darkness from Nairobi and install street lighting so that people can work 24 hours and to ensure there is security in our city of Nairobi,” he said.

On environmental management, Ruto emphasised the need to restore cleanliness in the capital, pledging sustained investment in waste management systems.

“And finally, we have agreed that we must remove garbage from the city of Nairobi. Nairobi must equally be a green and clean city,” he said.

He added that the broader programme is backed by significant government funding aimed at modernising the city.

“We have set aside 80 billion of government money to change the face of this Nairobi,” the President stated.

The President further reiterated that the Affordable Housing Programme remains central to his administration’s national transformation agenda, with ongoing projects targeting informal settlements such as Kibra.

During the tour, Ruto confirmed that the State Department of Housing will take over and complete the stalled 900-unit Kenya Railways housing project in Kibra.

He said the completed units will be allocated to local residents under the Affordable Housing Programme, alongside plans to construct an additional 3,000 units on the same land.

The President also revealed that the government is preparing to break ground for 15,000 more housing units in Kibra, significantly expanding access to modern housing.

In the education sector, Ruto handed over eight new classrooms at Raila Education Centre and 10 classrooms at Joseph Kang’ethe Primary School to improve learning conditions.

Beyond development, the President used the platform to emphasise political unity and national cohesion, calling for cooperation across party lines.

“And we have agreed that in this Nairobi, we are uniting all people of Nairobi on a broad base. We say the UDA party and the ODM party, we are all one brother,” he said.

He urged residents to embrace inclusivity and reject divisions based on ethnicity or political affiliation.

“We have sufficient reason to unite Kenyans; we want to remove discrimination, tribalism, and divisions. Let us unite because unity is strength,” Ruto stated.

The President engaged the crowd in a series of call-and-response chants, reinforcing his unity message during the rally.

“Let us unite Kenya. Let us unite Kenya,” he said, drawing cheers from the audience gathered at Undugu Grounds.

Ruto also acknowledged the presence of local leadership, including Nairobi’s Deputy Governor, as part of the broader push for coordinated governance.

“So I am here with my fellow leaders. I am here with our Deputy Governor… Deputy Governor Mr. Muchiri,” he said during the event.

The Nairobi tour comes as the government scales up implementation of its urban development agenda, particularly in informal settlements facing infrastructure deficits.

Officials indicated that the projects form part of a wider strategy to position Nairobi as a modern, efficient and globally competitive capital city.

The President concluded by urging continued collaboration between national and county governments to sustain the transformation momentum across the city.
