President William Samoei Ruto spent his Sunday at the Jesus Christ Compassion Ministry (JCM) church in Ruiru, Kiambu County, where he blended worship with politics and development, delivering a pointed message to leaders in the region.
Standing before the congregation, the Head of State did not shy away from addressing the simmering political tensions in Kiambu. He reminded elected leaders that they all rode to office on the same political vehicle and therefore had no excuse for endless rivalry. “All the leaders in this county, from the governor to the MCAs, are from the ruling party UDA, so why can’t we work together and stop politicking?” he posed.
His remarks drew applause from congregants as he framed leadership as a sacred trust. “We who have been elected by the people of Kiambu — from the MCA, MP, Senator, Governor, Woman Representative and the President — are the servants of the people of Kiambu and the people of Kenya,” he said, urging humility among those in office.
Ruto warned that public disputes and blame games would only derail development. “If the work in Kiambu goes wrong, we are the ones to be questioned. So I ask you leaders of Kiambu not to look at who to blame. If there is work to be done in Kiambu, we all must work together,” he declared.
The President then shifted to development, announcing a major infrastructure plan aimed at easing congestion along one of the country’s busiest corridors. He revealed that the government plans to construct a new expressway linking Thika to Nairobi’s Museum Hill. The road, he said, would significantly reduce traffic and unlock economic potential in the region.
He defended the national government’s track record in the county, noting that Kiambu has benefited from several state-funded projects. “Kiambu County has benefitted a lot from the national government. In fact, it is the only county with more modern markets constructed by the national government,” he said.
Accountability, he added, remains central to leadership. Ruto cautioned that leaders who fail to deliver risk political consequences. “Those who fail to deliver on their mandate risk being voted out in the next general elections,” he warned.
The church service also provided a platform for pledges of support to the host ministry. Moved by the church’s outreach programmes, Ruto announced direct financial backing for its education initiatives. “I will support you for three years… Today, I will send you KSh 3 million as a bursary for these children you are educating,” he said.
He went further, committing additional funds to ongoing projects. “Because you have a similar project here, I will add KSh 5 million to support your initiative,” he added, drawing cheers from congregants.
In response to a request from church leadership, the President promised to assist in securing the land on which the ministry operates. “The bishop has informed me that you are planning to buy this land where your church has been put up… and I will see how to help this church since it belongs to all,” he assured.
Throughout his address, Ruto repeatedly tied development to unity, arguing that politics should never overshadow service delivery. He insisted that collaboration among leaders is not optional but necessary for progress.
His visit to Ruiru underscored his continued engagement with faith-based institutions, which he has often described as key partners in social transformation.
By the time the service ended, the President had left behind more than sermons and pledges — he had delivered a clear message: unity among leaders, accountability to citizens, and accelerated infrastructure development remain at the heart of his agenda.
