President William Samoei Ruto has formally upgraded Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital in Othaya, Nyeri County, transforming it into an independent national medical facility with its own management and budget.

The hospital will now operate autonomously, enabling faster decision-making and improved delivery of specialised healthcare services for residents of Nyeri and surrounding counties.

Officials say the move is designed to expand access to advanced diagnostics, treatment, and specialised medical care, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for referral services.

President Ruto emphasised that the hospital’s upgrade includes strengthening staffing levels, acquiring modern medical equipment, and improving overall treatment capacity.

The facility is slated to transition to a Level 6 national referral hospital, in line with Kenya’s broader health system reforms and the government’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.

The elevation is part of a wider plan to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the country and improve access to quality services in underserved regions.

Beyond health, Ruto highlighted significant investments across Nyeri County aimed at boosting local economic development and community welfare.

He confirmed that multi‑billion-shilling projects are underway, focusing on modern markets, affordable housing units, and student hostels to support the county’s growth.

The projects are part of the administration’s broader agenda to create jobs, improve living standards, and promote inclusive development in all parts of Kenya.

President Ruto addressed residents of Chinga, Othaya, after attending a church service, reiterating the government’s commitment to regional progress.

He was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who lauded the initiatives as transformative for the community.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe also attended, highlighting the linkage between improved infrastructure, food security, and economic growth.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, along with local MPs and MCAs, were present to witness the announcement and reaffirm their support for ongoing development efforts.

Officials stated that the investments will not only improve healthcare and housing but also enhance economic opportunities and service delivery in the county.

Residents expressed optimism about the upgraded hospital and the broader development plans, noting the potential for lasting improvements in healthcare, education, and community infrastructure.
