Putin announced an Easter ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine
Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire in its war with Ukraine to mark Orthodox Easter, with the truce set to run from April 11 to April 12, 2026.
The ceasefire was declared by Vladimir Putin, who ordered Russian forces to halt combat operations during the Easter period while remaining prepared to respond to any violations.
The truce is expected to last approximately 32 hours and applies across key frontline areas where fighting has been ongoing.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier proposed a similar Easter ceasefire, including a pause on strikes targeting critical infrastructure.
Following Russia’s announcement, Ukrainian authorities indicated a willingness to observe the truce, though they expressed caution based on past experiences.
Previous temporary ceasefires linked to religious holidays have often collapsed, with both sides accusing each other of breaches.
The war, which escalated after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, continues to stretch across a long and active frontline in eastern and southern Ukraine.
In the days leading up to the truce, both sides reported continued airstrikes and shelling, highlighting the fragile security situation.
The conflict has caused significant casualties and widespread destruction of infrastructure across Ukraine.
Millions of civilians have been displaced internally or have fled to neighboring countries since the war began.
International efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire or peace agreement have so far not succeeded.
The Easter truce is being viewed as a limited humanitarian pause rather than a step toward a broader settlement.
Attention now remains on whether both sides will fully observe the ceasefire through April 12 or if violations will occur.
