Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to brace for major traffic disruptions on Sunday, October 26, 2025, as several key roads will be closed to pave the way for the annual Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. Organizers have released detailed diversion routes to help ease movement across the city during the event, which will begin shortly after midnight and run until early afternoon.
According to the notice, vehicles traveling from Kikuyu to Dagoretti will use the Southern Bypass, while those moving from Karen to Kikuyu will also access the Southern Bypass through Dagoretti Road. These diversions are aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow in the early hours before the main marathon starts.
From 12:00 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on Sunday, several other routes will be affected, including the Karen Shopping Centre–Kikuyu route, where motorists will use Dagoretti Road. Vehicles heading from Karen to Mombasa Road via the Southern Bypass will be redirected to Langata Road. Those using Langata Road, Mombasa Road, and Likoni Road will follow alternative routes through Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Enterprise Road respectively.
The second phase of closures will run from 12:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., affecting major routes such as Kikuyu, Dagoretti, Lenana, and Waiyaki Way. Motorists from Kikuyu and Dagoretti heading to Mombasa Road via the Southern Bypass will use Waiyaki Way, Ngong Road, and Mbagathi Way. Those from Lenana will use Naivasha Road, James Gichuru Road, or Langata Road through Karen, while trailers and lorries are directed to use Waiyaki Way.
Organizers have urged motorists to plan their journeys early and follow the indicated diversions to minimize delays. Roads will be reopened progressively once the marathon concludes, with normal traffic expected to resume by mid-afternoon. The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon remains one of the city’s largest sporting events, drawing thousands of participants and spectators each year.
