Jamaican Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff

Jamaican reggae icon Jimmy Cliff has died at the age of 81, his family confirmed. According to his wife, Latifa Chambers, Cliff passed away following a seizure, which was later complicated by pneumonia. The legendary singer and actor had a career spanning more than six decades, during which he helped bring reggae music to global audiences.

Born James Chambers in 1948 in Jamaica, Cliff rose to international fame with a string of hit songs, including “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” and his acclaimed cover of “I Can See Clearly Now.” His music not only defined the reggae genre but also carried messages of resilience, unity, and social consciousness, resonating with fans worldwide.

Cliff also gained renown as an actor, starring in the 1972 landmark film The Harder They Come. The movie, which featured his music prominently, is credited with introducing reggae to international audiences and cementing Cliff’s status as a cultural ambassador for Jamaica. His work in both music and film left a lasting imprint on global popular culture.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Jimmy Cliff won two Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. He was also honored in Jamaica with the Order of Merit, one of the country’s highest distinctions, recognizing his contributions to music and culture.

Cliff’s death prompted tributes from fans and political leaders alike. Jamaica’s People’s National Party described him as a “giant” and a “global cultural ambassador,” praising his role in shaping the country’s musical heritage. His influence on reggae and his impact on generations of musicians around the world ensures that his legacy will endure.
