Real Madrid Edge Marseille in Champions League Opener
Real Madrid began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Olympique Marseille at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night.
Timothy Weah gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 22nd minute, finishing off a move created by Mason Greenwood. Madrid responded six minutes later when Kylian Mbappé converted from the penalty spot to level the score at 1-1.
The match remained finely balanced until the 81st minute, when Mbappé struck again from the spot to complete his brace and seal victory for the Spanish giants.
The game was tense, with Real’s Dani Carvajal sent off in the 72nd minute for violent conduct, leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s side to defend their lead with ten men. Marseille pressed late on, but goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli—named Player of the Match—kept them at bay with crucial saves.
The win puts Real Madrid on strong footing in Group stage action, while Marseille will feel disappointed after a spirited display that nearly earned them a point in Madrid
