Barcelona kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday night. The Spanish giants had Marcus Rashford to thank after his quick-fire double in the second half secured all three points.
Following a goalless first half, Rashford broke the deadlock in the 58th minute after being set up by Jules Koundé. The England international struck again just nine minutes later, finishing off a move involving Dani Olmo to make it 2-0 for the visitors.
Newcastle pushed forward late in the game and were rewarded with a consolation goal in the 90th minute when Anthony Gordon converted Jacob Murphy’s assist. However, the Magpies could not find an equaliser despite seven minutes of added time.
The result leaves Barcelona with a perfect start in Group Stage action, while Newcastle will look to bounce back after falling short in their opening fixture.
