Raheem Sterling has completed a surprise move to Dutch giants Feyenoord after agreeing to join the Eredivisie side as a free agent. The former Chelsea winger signed a short-term contract running until the end of the 2025–26 season, marking a new chapter in his career.
The 31-year-old became available after mutually terminating his contract with Chelsea in late January. His Stamford Bridge deal had originally been due to run until 2027, but both parties agreed to part ways following a period in which Sterling fell out of the club’s long-term plans.
Feyenoord moved quickly to secure his signature, taking advantage of his free-agent status which allowed the transfer to be completed outside the standard window. The Rotterdam-based club view the signing as a major boost as they push for domestic success in the closing months of the campaign.
Sterling held discussions with several clubs before opting for a switch to the Netherlands. Feyenoord’s project and the opportunity for regular first-team football are understood to have played a decisive role in his decision.
The move represents Sterling’s first professional experience outside England. He previously featured for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and spent a loan spell at Arsenal, building a decorated résumé that includes multiple Premier League titles.
Despite his pedigree, Sterling has not played competitive football in recent months after struggling for minutes at Chelsea. Feyenoord are expected to integrate him quickly, with the winger likely to feature in wide attacking roles.
For Feyenoord, the arrival of a player with Sterling’s experience and top-level pedigree signals clear ambition. For the former England international, the transfer offers an opportunity to revive his form and reassert himself at the highest level of European football.
