Pst. Dorcas Advocates For Inclusion Of PWDs In Government Programs
Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the wife of Kenya's Deputy President, has called for the inclusion of people with disabilities (PWDs) in government programs. She believes that PWDs can contribute significantly to the economic growth of the country.
Speaking during a visit to Narok County, Pastor Rigathi said that the government is striving to create an enabling learning environment for PWDs by providing the necessary infrastructure and resources.
She also said that the government is implementing programs for PWDs, such as cash transfers, allocation of a proportion of government tenders, and employment opportunities.
Pastor Rigathi commended the Teacher Service Commission and other government institutions for embracing diversity and providing reasonable accommodations that can bring out talents among PWDs that are often overlooked.
She encouraged locals to come out and register PWDs with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and offer opportunities when they arise. She also urged them to stop hiding PWDs.
On his part, County commissioner, Isaac Masinde, said that the government has registered over 7,000 PWDs in Narok county of which out of the registered, 400 were beneficiaries of the cash transfer program.
Masinde also urged the locals to register PWDs in the registration exercise as this helps the government with planning.
The deputy governor, Tamalinye Koech, assured support from the county government for the initiative that empowers the PWDs in the county.
