Professor Fred Ogola, the leader of Team Evolve, has issued a strong appeal for young Kenyans to register as voters ahead of the deadline.
Ogola argues that the youth demographic will determine electoral outcomes, dismissing the anti-Ruto narrative that high registration is solely motivated by a desire to unseat President William Ruto.
During an appearance on Signs Breakfast, Prof. Ogola stated that while young people effectively gauge and determine a candidate's popularity, their actual turnout at the ballot box remains low.
He clarified his view on the recent youth movement, stating the success of the "Gen Z revolution" was not rooted in the youth voting for themselves but rather in a revolutionary protest against leaders who use them as political stepping stones.
Prof. Ogola's call echoes similar ongoing appeals from political figures and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for youth voter registration.
According to the commission, only 39.84% of eligible youth were registered to vote in the 2022 elections.
The commission has set an ambitious goal to enroll 6.3 million new voters before the 2027 General Elections, with 70% of the youth expected to account for this figure.
To qualify for registration, Article 83 of the Constitution mandates that an individual must be a Kenyan citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid Kenyan Identity Card (ID) or Passport. Furthermore, prospective voters must not have been convicted of an electoral offense within the last five years, must be of sound mind, and must not already appear on the current voter roll.
